A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
