A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
